Practical Practicing for Jazz Musicians

Type of Class: 

  • Live Zoom meetings with comments and discussion. 
  • All classes will be recorded and archived for those who could not participate live and for those wishing to review.
  • The class can be taken either synchronously or asynchronously.

Course description:

We will cover ways to design and organize practice sessions for greatest effect.

We will present approaches to expanding one’s repertoire of tunes, acquiring jazz vocabulary, using transcriptions, mastering scale and chord sounds, developing aural skills, dynamics, articulation, phrasing, musical style, drama and storytelling, etc.

Application of practice room strategies to actual improvisation and repertoire and transferring skills and knowledge to application will be a focus.
We will discuss diagnosis, troubleshooting, goal setting, and problem solving in designing the most effective way to practice for each person at any stage of development.
