Colombian Jazz and Beyond

Course description:

Colombian traditional music has several styles, and nowadays it has become one of the most exciting styles in the world. Learning about it would expand your musical horizons.

The course is tailored to  rhythm section players who are interested in taking a deep dive into Colombian music from the Andean Region. Students will explore genres such as Pasillo, Guabina and Bambuco, and be able to play them doing connection with jazz.

Through audio/video examples, backing tracks, and pdf handouts, you will have a set of tools to develop a deeper connection with the Colombian music repertoire and to play that music with confidence and familiarity.

All Lessons are professionally recorded. You will find a recorded performance of each one of the songs included in the lessons. Then through the analysis of the instructor’s performances on each one of the genres, you will learn how they approached each tune, the main patterns, variations and how to develop the Colombian Andean groove in a jazz way.

The course was develop with the support of the Colombian Department of Culture´s grant “Beca para la Producción de Bienes y Servicios Creativos y Culturales Innovadores II”

Target audience:  

  • The course is directed to rhythm section players, drummers, bassists, guitarists and piano players, but open to anyone interested in deepening his or her knowledge in Colombian music.

Course Length: 

6 Lessons:

  • Lesson 1 – The Colombian Pasillo
  • Lesson 2 – Let’s explore more options around Colombian pasillo
  • Lesson 3 – The Colombian Bambuco
  • Lesson 4 – The Colombian Guabina
  • Lesson 5 – Playing with a Big Band
  • Lesson 6 – What About playing without drums?

You will receive:

  • 6 Lessons recorded professionally with each performer explaining how to play the genres on their instrument.
  • PDF handouts with performance notes and transcriptions of each one of the lessons.
  • Charts of each lesson tune (concert, Bb, Eb and bass clef)
  • Backing tracks of each lesson tune (all versions: no bass, no drums, no piano, no guitar)
