Course Description:

In this course the evolution of jazz music will be traced from its origins through the present.  The course will explore the development of the various stylistic trends that characterize jazz.  Socio-economic factors and events that have influenced the course of America’s native art music will be included in the discussion as will the evolution of, and changes in, the musical style and form.  In addition, students will be introduced to the innovators of each style through recordings.

Objectives:  This course has six major objectives, which are as follows:

  1. To introduce the student to the medium of jazz music through lecture and listening activities.
  2. To help the student become acquainted with the evolution of various styles of jazz from a perspective of time.
  3. To provide the student with information to better appreciate jazz music performances.
  4. To acquaint the student with the major artists who have influenced the various styles of jazz music.
  5. To acquaint the student with the major sociological factors and events that have influenced the stylistic evolution of jazz.
  6. To heighten the student’s awareness of, and interest in, jazz music.

Type of Class (Format):

  • Live Zoom meetings with comments and discussion.
  • All classes will be recorded and archived for those who could not participate live and for those wishing to review.

Target Audience:  

  • Open to all interested in jazz music and the history of its development
  • Especially helpful to anyone interested in the different styles of jazz and how they evolved
  • Minimum of 10 participants required for class to proceed

  • 8 weekly 75 minute sessions — March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; April 5, 12 & 19 2023

  • Class 2 Early Jazz 1900-1930 – New Orleans and Chicago
  • Class 3 Swing and Bebop 1930-1950
  • Class 4 Hard Bop and Cool 1950-1960
  • Class 5 Avant Garde and Fusion 1960-1980
  • Class 6 Modern Eclecticism 1980-2000
  • Class 7 Contemporary/Smooth Jazz 1980-present
  • Class 8 21st Century
